This product, along with massage, exercise, appears to have been instrumental in ending my husband's shoulder joint pain. If you have a joint injury you need to take several of these a day for a while to hope to get relief.

Tanita BC-548 Ironman Body Composition Monitor, Glass Review

I like this product. I write down the stats, track the results in Excel. The only thing that is iffy is the number that tells your body type. It basically takes the numbers and guestimates - a lot. Other then that it is a great product.
I love the weight, body fat, and muscle weight.
I recommend this for anyone who wants to track more then weight. If you are working out a lot and not losing weight it could be because you are gaining muscle. This will tell you.

Tanita BF679W Duo Scale Plus Body Fat Monitor with Body Water Review

Tanita BF679W Duo Scale Plus Body Fat Monitor with Body Water
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I previously owned the Tanita 2001 body fat scale. When that one died, I upgraded to the 679W Duo model and have been very pleased.
FEATURES
The scale measures weight, body fat %, and body water %. The scale has 4 metal pads that will send a low-level electrical current through your body. People with higher muscle content will allow the electrical current to traverse their bodies with less resistance than a Mr. McFatty person. The scale measures this resistance and calculates your body fat and hydration levels from it. I have found the weight, body fat, and body water measurements to be highly accurate when compared to a couple other scales that I've stepped on recently.
EASE OF USE
There are three buttons on the face of the scale right below the display that allow you to input your sex, age, and height. It's all very simple to make selections and input these data. Along with these three face buttons are three toe buttons at the bottom of the scale. You can store personal info for two users (the sex, height, and age info) into two of the buttons. Then everyday when you want your measurements, if you're User 1, just touch Toe Button 1 or if you're User 2, touch Toe Button 2 and step on the scale. This way you do not have to input all that info every single time (like you need to with the Tanita 2001). This is a great feature. Some other brands or other Tanita models offer 2-10 User Memory, but they often do not have corresponding toe buttons, which means you still have to bend your fat self down and hit the user button with your finger first. Believe me, after 3 days of that, you're not going to want to do that anymore.
The third Toe Button is a Weight Toe Button that you can hit if you just want the scale to act as a normal scale. Finally, you can bend down and use your fingers to input age, height, and sex as a one-time use for a guest.
DURABILITY
I've had my scale for 9 months now and it's always worked fine with no problems. It takes 4 AA batteries, and I'm still using the ones that came included with the scale despite my nearly daily use. This is much better battery life than the Tanita 2001 model, which seemed to only last 4 months or so. You will only need to occasionally wipe off the metal footpads to keep them clean for accurate readings. No big deal.
PROBLEMS/MISCONCEPTIONS
Honestly, for about $50, there are no problems with this unit. It's a great buy. However, I read some negative reviews here from confused people. First, there are warnings all over the box and on the site that tell you not to use this product if you have a pacemaker or internal electronic device that's keeping you alive. This is obviously because it measures your body fat by sending an electrical current through your body. C'mon, think people. And this isn't just for the BF679W, it's for all "commercial" body fat scales. Second, reviewers talk about the consistency of the body fat measurements. Your body fat can fluctuate 1 or 2 percent over the course of the day with these types of electrical conductance measurements based on where your body is currently holding water. If you always take your reading at the same time each night (right before you goto bed is ideal), you'll typically find consistent readings within 0.5% - 1%. If you measure your body fat right after you wake up, there will be all kinds of water centrally concentrated in your bladder that will mess up the readings. Again, this happens with all commercial body fat scales. Finally, it's possible the BF679W tells you that you have 17% body fat and really you have 15% body fat based on thorough measurements from your doctor's office. I still think the number is going to be very close to your real body fat percentage. However, this scale will still be able to do a reliable, accurate job informing you when you've lost or gained an extra percent or two of body fat over the course of several weeks. So while your absolute body fat numbers could be slightly off with the BF679W, your relative gains and losses will still be highly quantifiable with this unit.
Overall, this is a outstanding, durable scale that delivers dependable readings. I strongly recommend it and would encourage people who are thinking of buying the Tanita 2001 or any other body fat scale that does not have toe buttons to purchase this model instead; it's worth it.

The Tanita BF679W Duo Scale Plus Body Fat Monitor can monitor both your body fat and body water percentages. This scale also features a daily calorie intake function that estimates how many calories should be consumed in a 24-hour period for a user to maintain current weight level, and a dual recall feature that compares bothcurrent weight and body fat readings to the previous readings. Why You Should Monitor Body Water and Fat Percentage If you're like most people, you're not drinking enough water. If you wait until you feel thirsty, your body is already suffering from the effects of mild dehydration. You continually lose water during the day through sweat, urine and breathing. The amount varies due to several reasons, including your physical activity level, illness, medications, poor nutrition, or even climatic conditions. Monitoring your body water percentage allows you to quickly compensate if your levels are low, allowing your body to function more efficiently. Having the right amount of water in your body will not only make you feel healthier, but you'll also reduce your risk of developing serious health problems in the longer term.High body fat levels can reduce your endurance and have been linked to heart disease cancer and diabetes. Tanita's body composition analyzers monitor your body fat and body water levels with Bioelectric Impedance Analysis, or BIA, the same advanced technology used by doctors. Foot pads send a low-level electrical signal. Then BIA measures the resistance to this signal as it travels through the body. The Tanita BF679W is calibrated for standard adults and children and stores data for 2 people and measures body fat in increments of 0.5 percentage points. This scale also features a guest mode, allowing you to use the unit without losing information already assigned to the personal keys. The scale's large, easy-to-read 2.25-inch, 2-line LCD shows weight and body fat simultaneously, and instantly compares these readings to healthy ranges based on the user's age and gender. Simply supply your gender, age, height and weight into the memory, step on the scale, and the monitor does the rest. The results are analyzed according to each user's information, and the result is the one of the most comprehensive at-home readings you can get.Operating on four AA batteries (included), the Tanita BF679W is intended for use by persons up to 300 pounds and is backed by Tanita's three-year warranty. Note: Pregnant women should not use this monitor, and if you have a pacemaker or other internal electronic medical device, you should not use the body fat reading feature.

FatTrack GOLD Digital Body Fat Caliper with FREE MyoTape Review

FatTrack GOLD Digital Body Fat Caliper with FREE MyoTape
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just got this thing and I'm happy with it in general, but there is a reference to an "IMPROVE YOUR MEASURING SKILLS" guide that is not included. It is impossible to get reliable results with this tool without a diagram of where to get the measurements. Just saying chest, abdomen, thigh is ridiculously unclear.
It is also somewhat difficult to learn how to pinch fat only. The first few times you are likely to get crazy results.
I was able to find this manual page on the internet:
http://www.accufitness.com/products/fattrack_pro_manual2.html
It cleared up most of my issues.

HoMedics SC-505 Body Fat Analyzer And Scale Review

HoMedics SC-505 Body Fat Analyzer And Scale
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this scale at a local store and brought it home. I stepped on it for the first time, and found I was 13 lbs heavier than I had been just that morning! On subsequent tries I could never get it to give me the same weight twice and the variations were not small (sometimes 2 lbs, sometimes 10 or more). My husband tried it an experienced the same problem. It was also hard to set it up and make it work, it wouldn't always weigh you when you stepped on it and would often give an "error" message. All in all, quite possibly the worst scale I have ever tried. I promptly returned it.

Taylor 5571 Breast Cancer Awareness Body Fat Scale Review

Taylor 5571 Breast Cancer Awareness Body Fat Scale
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great scale and an excellent value ! After calling Taylor directly with product questions - I was extremely impressed by the knowledge of the person I spoke to about this product and how it measures Body Fat %. Be sure you are fully hydrated when you take a Body Fat Reading to get your most accurate Body Fat measurement. How do you know when you are properly hydrated? The scale will tell you with the Body Water %. The best time to take the Body Fat reading is later in the day - before your last meal.
The weight measurements have been consistent. I think this product is just plain excellent!

The Taylor 5571P PrecisionTech Body Fat Analyzer Scale measures body fat and body water with 0.5-percent accuracy. Designed with pink and white accents that show support for fighting breast cancer, this scale is built with four memories to store the whole family's personal data. The scale uses BIA (Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis) to measure body fat and body water percentage. By using relatively simple technology, this scale measures electrical resistance (body cell mass is a good conductor, while fat tissue is a bad conductor) and capacitive resistance (created at the cell membranes of the cell mass). Then, the collected data is used to calculate the BIA.
So what does all this have to do with weight loss? Based on the data collected by this scale, deficiencies such as catabolism (the unwanted breakdown of lean muscle mass) can be documented, which is important to track during weight loss. When you reduce bodyweight, fat tissue should be reduced, not muscle mass. Thus, tracking your BIA is especially important when you diet because it shows "real" weight loss progress, so you're not just dropping pounds, but also burning away unwanted fat.
This scale does more than help you fight your weight loss, it also helps fight breast cancer. Breast cancer touches almost everyone -- family, friends, or co-workers -- and Taylor wants to help fund the fight. With the purchase of this scale, Taylor will donate one dollar to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Increased body fat has been linked in studies to an increased risk of breast cancer. Using the 5571P will help you monitor your overall body health, and, by focusing on body fat, body water, and weight levels, you can keep close tabs on your health and make changes to minimize your risks of breast cancer.
In addition to body fat and body water analysis, this scale also features a scale-only mode for basic weight measurements. It is accurate to 330 pounds, features an instant on, auto zero, auto off, and low battery indicator. All functions are powered by a single nine-volt battery (not included).

I love this scale so much. Once you get the hand of it it is so easy to use. The weight is accurate (I have weighed myself 10 times in a row and still got the same number). The results come up fast on the screen and I love the graph that it shows when you measure fat. This scale is great and not too expensive! Definitely worth the money!

Omron Body Fat Analyzer Review

Omron Body Fat Analyzer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Omron HBF-306 is very simple to use. Because it uses electrical resitance and calculated "wing span" to measure BF%, it's possible (due to differences in arm length) that your reading may not be 100% accurate compared to a clinical "immersion" test. However, it is definitely consistent! I also have caliper type pinchers and found them too inconsistent (unless you can pinch the same exact spot each time).
With the Omron HBF-306, you can easily track changes in your body fat % as you progress through your fitness training. You'll be able to easily tell if your losing fat and/or gaining muscle by monitoring your BF% along with your weight. Check your weight and body fat % first thing in the morning for the most consistent readings. I highly recommend it.

Omron HBF-306C Fat Loss Monitor, Black Review

Omron HBF-306C Fat Loss Monitor, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I never buy anything without doing research on what to buy first. If you read about BMI analyzers on About.com it not only recommends this as one of their top 3 picks over ANY kind of body fat analyzer, but it also explains why some people didnt get the results expected on these comments...because of user error.
Most admit to using this first thing in the morning.
It says on about.com never to do that. For accurate readings, use 3 hours after a meal, never first thing in the morning, (you are dehydrated then) never use when dehydrated, but you should use after emptying your bladder. (remember it's guaging what percent of you is muscle vs water so you want your body water to be balanced and normal...not too low with dehydration, not too high with a full bladder.) Also it's best to use this, or any monitor, when unclothed if possible. Ive found that part not to matter that much as everyone at my office borrows this sometimes and, because bare workers would be awkward, we've found it to read accurately clothed. :-)
Also, if you have a very high muscle mass and a very low BMI set it on "athlete" for an accurate reading. So yes, even bodybuilders CAN use it...you just have to know how.
This explained those who had problems and the unbiased rating on the aformentioned website (and others) states that this is WAY more accurate than calipers...made me buy it. I"d used it before at the gym and it was always great. But before I purchase on my own, I learn.
I use mine often and it is right on target as to what's going on with my body. A handheld non-electronic (or even electronic if it's the kind you place ON your fat) caliper will vary if you do not measure the EXACTLY in the same place each time and squeeze to the exact resistance. You avoid that common error via this latest technology. This has the latest.
I bought this one because or reading about what technology works the best from consumer tests by the experts. And I am happy with my purchase.
As an aside, I also discovered the scales that do fat testing through your feet are not as accurate as this method of testing either, even the Omron scale didnt test for accuracy as well as this Omron fat tester.
So I thought I'd share what i found in my week of research prior to purchase.
I love this body fat analyzer and my friends who have used it got their own as well. If you are bloated, your scale can't tell you why your weight is up. This can. And some days, I thank it for that!

The Omron HBF-306C Body Fat Analyzer measures your body fat with a gentle, micro electrical current -- don't worry, you won't feel it. The key to long-term exercise success is accurate body fat composition measurement. This handheld body fat analyzer is an affordable and easy way to measure your body fat in the privacy of your own home. After inputting the data, a measurement can be started by simply holding the grip electrodes and pressing the start button. And since the analyzer is built with a nine person profile memory, each member of your family or team can track the success of their individual exercise routines. The HBF-306C features two modes -- athlete and normal -- for accurate results. The device is a breeze to use, and it returns measurement results in seven seconds for both Bi method (Bioelectrical Impedance Method) and BMI (Body Mass Index). The unit displays the measured value of your body fat percentage through the BMI method, and indicates the body mass in for ranges from low, normal, high, and very high according to the BMI value.
What is the Bioelectrical Impedance Method? Muscles, blood vessels and bones are body tissues having a high water content that conduct electricity easily. Body fat is tissue that has little electric conductivity. The Body Fat Analyzer sends an extremely weak electrical current of 50 kHz and 500 µA through your body to determine the amount of fat tissue. This weak electrical current is not felt while operating the Body Fat Analyzer. The Bioelectrical Impedance Method safely combines the electric resistance with the distance of the electricity conducted. Correct posture and consistent measuring conditions need to be maintained for the best results.
Operating the Analyzer To use the HBF-306C you must first set your personal datYou must first select between the Normal and Athlete modes. To determine if you should select Normal or Athlete, you must calculate your FIT index by using the following formula:
FIT Index = Frequency x Intensity x Time
Frequency is a single digit number from one to five that represents your frequency of exercise. If you exercise daily or almost daily, then use the number five; three to four times per week use four; one to two times per week use three; a few times per month use two; and for less than once a month use one. If you workout vigorously, then you use the number five to represent your intensity level; if you workout with moderate or light effort, use the number four.
Meanwhile, time is a single digit number from four to one that represents the duration of your workout. If you exercise for 45 minutes or more, then use the number four; 30-44 minutes use three; 15-29 minutes use two; and for less than 15 minutes use one. For example, if you run five times a week for 30 minutes, your FIT index would be 75 (5 x 5 x 3 = 75) and you would select the Athlete setting. If your FIT index is greater than 60, you should select the Athlete setting. Any number below would demand a normal setting.
After determining your FIT index and selecting between the Athlete and Normal setting, the remaining personal data is very straightforward. Simply enter your height, weight, age and gender. When all the data is fixed and stored, the analyzer screen will display "Ready," and you'll be ready to take your first body fat measurements.
Note: For the following cases, the body fat percentage measured by this unit may significantly differ from the actual body fat percentage.
Children in a growth stage
Elderly people and post-menopausal women
People with a fever
People who have swelling
Patients with osteoporosis who have very low bone density
Bodybuilders or professional athletes
Patients undergoing dialysis

Q&A - Fitness Monitors What is the Bioelectrical Impedance Method? Bioelectrical Impedance (BI) is considered one of the most accurate and accessible methods of screening body fat. Muscles, blood vessels and bones are body tissues having a high water content that conduct electricity easily. Body fat is tissue that has little electric conductivity. The monitor sends an extremely weak electrical current through your body to determine the amount of fat tissue. Theweakelectrical current is not felt while operating the Body Fat Analyzer. The monitoris calculated by a formula thatincludes five factors; electric resistance, height, weight, ageandgender. What is visceral fat? Visceral fat is located around the organs. Too much visceral fat is thought to be closely linked to increased level of fat in the bloodstream, which can lead to common conditions such as high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Sedentary life style causes excess visceral fat, and exercise can reduce it quicker than subcutaneous fat (fat located under skin). What is resting metabolism? Resting metabolism is the energy to maintain vital functions and it counts 60 to 70% of total energy consumption. Knowing your resting metabolism can help your dietplan. If you can increase daily activity while keeping food intake at resting metabolism level, you can lose weight. What is skeletal muscle? Skeletal muscle is muscle attached to the bones that is used to move the body. If you do weight loss without exercise, you may lose skeletal muscle. Skeletal muscle is important to maintain your resting metabolism as well as your functionality. Monitoring skeletal muscle during weight loss is key to avoid weight rebound in the future.
